Chapter 23

~

“When are you coming home?” Henry straightened up the kitchen and loaded the dinner dishes into the dishwasher while talking to Emily.

“I’m working with Trinity Taylor’s private investigator. I think we’re getting close. Remember Pam Simpson?”

“The one who lied about where she was the night of the murder? Last I heard, Trinity knew she’d headed east before the murder.”

“Well, we found out she stayed in a hotel in Cleveland which was booked with her boss’s credit card. We think they were having an affair and maybe he volunteered to help get Jarvis out of the picture. She’d been sending death threats to the prison when Jarvis was in there.”

“How are you coming up with an affair? Because he paid for the hotel?”

“And her coworkers were gossiping in the elevator.”

“And she and the boss came to Vermont?”

“Not exactly. I mean, that’s what we’re working on. We got her leaving work early and driving over five hours to Cleveland the day before the murder. We have to account for the next day. I think we’re close.”

“Okay. Do what you’ve got to do. Maddy and I are fine here.”

“Love you.”

“Love you, too. Be careful out there.”

Henry turned on the dishwasher and settled down in the living room. Any alternatives to Maddy being the only young lady at the bungalows the night of the murder were good. He stopped short of asking whether or not Pam Simpson was blond.

It was lonely without Emily. Maddy spent most of her time shut in her room. Tonight, she’d gone over to Jenna’s house for movies and pizza.

He felt an undercurrent of worry that he couldn’t shake. According to Angie the shuttle driver, Maddy was at the bungalows the night of the murder. She’d lied about being at Jenna’s. Who was he kidding? The blond who was spotted on the grounds wasn’t Pam Simpson–––it was his own daughter! Thank God Emily didn’t know or she’d have gone off the deep end.

Bad enough Emily found Maddy’s hair tie in the barn near where the gun was kept. Thankfully, she’d bought Maddy’s explanation about looking for a spirit day costume. Maddy was both creative and quick on her feet. Was he wrong to keep his suspicions from Emily? She was out in Chicago chasing after Pam Simpson because she thought Pam had been spotted at the bungalows. What would she do if she knew it was Maddy out there?

Maybe it wasn’t Maddy after all who killed Jarvis. Maybe she wanted to confront Jarvis, went out there, and chickened out. Came right back home. Pam Simpson, in the meantime, showed up and shot Jarvis.

On the other hand, Maddy knew how to handle a gun, thanks to Fiona–––may she rest in peace. And why was she researching murders and how to load a gun, as if she needed a refresher course? He felt like a painted horse on a merry-go-round.

He grabbed Spunky’s leash. “Spunky, walk time.” Spunky hobbled over, tail wagging. He scratched between Spunky’s ears as he snapped the leash on his collar.
